"Learning without thinking is labor lost;
thinking without learning is perilous"
The aim of Mind Development is to awaken the innate powers of mind...
A course in Mind Development can benefit you in a number of ways, depending on what areas you feel you are weak at, or what you want to change about yourself and your capabilities. If you do these courses you should expect to see stable improvements in your life skills and abilities at work. You will have better judgment, increased mental speed and will power, better self-expression, the ability to study effectively and recall what you have learned, more creative insights, and confidence in your capacity to achieve your personal goals in life.
No one need accept that they must remain as they were shaped, by the conditioning of their childhood and culture. The benefits of Mind Development are all-encompassing and life transforming. Intelligence is a skill that can be learned and these are the courses to do so...
- to improve speed and accuracy of logical thought so the solutions to life's continual parade of problems are readily apparent
- to raise introspective awareness so that you are in touch with your full knowledge base and can access it intuitively and from simultaneous multiple perspectives
- and to remain mindful at all times so you are are not taken over by habits and conditioned programs nor by "fight or flight" emotional reactions.
The foundation courses of Mind Development are available to purchase on this site; further more advanced courses are also being prepared but they will depend for their efficacy on the solid foundation of a mind capable of communication and understanding to a high degree, such as may be obtained from Mind Development Courses 1-5.
A young person will benefit by improved grades and a much better chance of excelling in higher education, ready to start a successful career. A person at work will have important advantages over his or her colleagues. And a retired person will be able to forestall and even reverse the decline of intellectual abilities that so often accompanies aging. You surely want to enjoy your retirement and take advantage of your lifetime's accumulation of knowledge - not lose your mind and with it your identity.
What you don't use you lose - that applies to all ages. What you do use can be trained, with the right mind development methods and sufficient practice, to become more and more efficient. Mental capacity is effectively unlimited.
Research has been done on the brain for many years. The most important point to come from this has been that one side of the brain tends to become cut off from the other, as painful memories and feelings are repressed. For most people, one side will dominate according to what sort of abilities and aptitudes they have, and the cultural influences of their upbringing. Furthermore, unconscious blocks can freeze huge proportions of our mental energy, and this can cause a person to feel negative, angry or depressed for no apparent reason.
We have identified the causes of such barriers and over the course of many years have refined our techniques for helping individuals to achieve their potential mental capacity. The cognitive enhancement techniques of Mind Development make the mind much more efficient because they open up the pathways of left-right brain communication and assist the person to regain all of their positive mental energy. They can then obtain the goals they want and take control of their destiny.
The natural decline of some of our mental abilities as we age starts much earlier than some of us might expect. Mental powers start to dwindle at 27 after peaking at 22, marking the beginnings of the aging process, US research suggests. Professor Timothy Salthouse of Virginia University found reasoning, speed of thought and spatial visualization all decline in our late 20s. Therapies designed to stall or reverse the ageing process may need to start much earlier, he said. His seven-year study of 2,000 healthy people aged 18-60 is published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. To test mental agility, the study participants had to solve puzzles, recall words and story details and spot patterns in letters and symbols.
At the Alzheimer's Research Trust, the same tests are used by doctors to understand cognitive development and decline. In nine out of 12 tests the average age at which the top performance was achieved was 22. The first age at which there was any marked decline was at 27 in tests of brain speed, reasoning and visual puzzle-solving ability. Things like memory stayed intact until the age of 37, on average, while abilities based on accumulated knowledge, such as performance on tests of vocabulary or general information, increased until the age of 60.
Therefore, Mind Development should ideally be started early to avoid decline. But it's never too late, as given appropriate stimuli the brain is remarkably flexible and the usual decline can indeed be reversed by thoroughly practiced cognitive development techniques.
We have been reviewing current research papers on the subject of the effect of I.Q. on lifespan, health and mental illness and in this material there are three interesting correlations:
There are about at least a dozen mental illnesses, and nearly one person in three will seek the help of a psychiatrist at some time in their lives. Those with a higher I.Q. are better able to cope with minor mental dysfunction (head injuries, neuro toxins, mild psychosis, neurosis and the early stages of dementia), because they have greater cognitive reserve. Recent researches indicate that by and large, a higher IQ equals better health.
- A 30 point increase in I.Q. would increase life span by about six years.
- A 30 point increase in I.Q. would halve the risk of dementia.
- A 30 point increase in I.Q. would halve the risk of mental illness.
A 30 point increase in I.Q. is well within the range of Mind Development, when the courses are done with diligence, practicing the exercises presented to the degree of assured competence.
In this ever more competitive socio-economic environment, it looks as if soon there will be no jobs for people with an I.Q. below 120... these jobs will be done by machine or computer, or farmed out to third-world countries. Mind Development is therefore a necessity for many people, firstly to get a job and secondly to keep it. In the future, many could end up unemployed unless they take steps to increase their IQ and standard of education. They will need peak mental performance in order to compete.
Peak Mental Performance
The hardware of the human computer is the brain; the software is the person's mind; the programmer is the human spirit. The aim of Mind Development is to awaken people to their innate powers of mind. To achieve this it is necessary to improve introspective awareness and in particular to regain awareness of mental processes that are normally below the level of consciousness, so that you are in touch with your full knowledge base and can access it intuitively. This kind of metacognition ('knowing what you know') is formally described as mature intuition. In this way, the person becomes awakened as the "meta-programmer" of his mind. Of course, the ends to which such awakened powers are applied lie within the hands of each student. There are many ways in which we can begin to make our lives count and improve the lot of Mankind.
As long as we are depending on safe solutions, prejudiced judgments and fixed ideas, our mind is closed to inspecting anew, to discovering our own truth. Those mental structures affect the way that we feel and act, and filter our perception so that we are unlikely to notice the message of nature and we are likely to distort the meaning of the song in our heart.
It's Catch-22. The beauty of nature is often just what we need to remind us that our problems are exaggerated in our minds; and the gut feelings we have, if listened to, bring us back to the reality of our core instincts and intuitive sense.
So actually we need both, the intellect and the heart. And to move forward in our lives, we need the two well integrated and cleared of distortions, misperceptions and limitations. Our genuine feelings need to be released and our beliefs re-examined - so that we act from inspiration, not from the dictates of earlier conditioning.
The two work hand-in-hand. Rationality does not necessarily mean masculine insensitivity, and heart intelligence is not just for the na ve. Feelings and relationships need focus and direction, and action needs an empathic understanding of context. Objectivity in the light of love is the means.

MIND DEVELOPMENT COURSES 1-5
Super Vision - Mind Development Course 1
course in the Mind Development system is "Super Vision," a home-study
course to improve the mind's capacity for visualization and integration between
left and right brain, boosting memory, creativity, natural eyesight and drawing
ability. This is a new way of seeing - and being.
The practical exercises offered in this course help to
develop visual perception, which is one branch of non-verbal communication, and
address the subject of breathing and relaxation. Adequate oxygenation of the
brain and a relaxed state of being is necessary for further developing the
The eyes and the ears are the main channels through which one
gains information about the world. As with listening skills, training in
visualization and looking makes you more aware. When you are more aware, the
subconscious mind has less influence. This means you are more relaxed, less
anxious, less easily upset, a better memorizer - and your vision is improved.

Effective Communication - Mind Development Course 2
This course teaches powerful communication skills that enable you to be more
effective at work and in those situations of everyday life where better
communication can make all the difference.
The Effective Communication course offers a
series of practical exercises which develop the skills of communication and
help the student to apply the fruits of his or her learning here and now - both to his or her
personal growth and to the practical issues of personal relationships and
Improvement in our
ability to communicate externally is reflected by a similar gain in communication
between parts of the brain. The practice exercises enable development of all areas of the brain, even those which have been long under-used. They affect, particularly,
the integration of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Each hemisphere
governs a different way of thinking and seeing the world. By doing the
exercises thoroughly, the student can bring both halves of the brain into mutual communication, so that he or
she is freer to think holistically and experience the world from an expanded
point of view.
Communication is the
vehicle for all further techniques, so communications skills are a vital aspect
of Mind Development. The Effective
Communication course includes practical exercises to enhance the person's
capacity to listen attentively and comprehend. Following that, questioning
skills are practiced, which have relevance to communication, memory and
understanding. This will help the student to maintain control of communication in practical, social and business
situations. You will also learn about practical problem solving and how to
achieve your goals in life.

Concentration: Educating the Will - Mind Development Course 3
This course teaches the skills of concentration
as a means of educating the will. Often, when we put our mind on something, we
think of something else and this, in turn, reminds us of something else. The
mind wanders from one thing to another by associations, until the original
thing is forgotten. 'Concentration' means putting all one's attention on
something, and keeping it there for as long as one wishes to. So if you
concentrate on a book, you are aware of the book and you are not thinking,
looking or listening to anything else. If you are concentrating you are awake
and aware. In much of everyday life, most people are effectively day-dreaming - at worst they are sleep-walking automatons. Their
minds flip mechanically from one thing to another, never resting on anything
for very long or intentionally. This process may go on for the whole of their
lives and they never learn or achieve anything of consequence.
Unless we can wake ourselves up from this mechanicalness and sleep,
we cannot begin work on ourselves and we cannot get things done in life. We
must learn the mood of concentration - of actually BEING in the Here-and-Now,
noticing and observing, and focused on our actions.
Concentration is a means to develop the will, so that life may be
lived purposely and creatively, rather than as a reaction to the flow of
sensations. Because you will not flit from one thing to another, like a
butterfly, you will be able to choose to focus your mind on things, e.g., study
or work, and will increase your skills and knowledge in these areas. Most
importantly, you will be able to focus more clearly on your vision of what you
want to achieve.
In short, your mental life is both intensified and broadened. The
ability to concentrate is, therefore, a valuable skill which
will enhance all other skills. Almost all the drills and exercises of Mind
Development help develop your ability to concentrate. But are there are ways to
improve your concentration directly? Yes, and this course teaches
the best of them.

Super Student - Mind Development Course 4
Many people have bad experiences at school and
perhaps later in life, when attempting to study a new subject. It is easy to
quickly get bogged down with new terminology, and often, new concepts and
procedures seem unclear. This situation can quickly get out of hand as the
student gets left behind and the subject either becomes an ongoing struggle or
it is abandoned. But none of that is necessary; it is possible to succeed with
the study of any subject.
With this course you will learn how to study a subject with maximum
comprehension, with excellent recall, and with the ability to apply what you
have learned effectively.
You will also learn how to take notes at rapid pace from books or
live lectures, and how best to represent that information with key words, mind
maps and flow charts that aid memory and understanding.
These abilities will be useful for your home studies, at college or
work, and for your study of further Mind Development courses. You will indeed
be able to succeed at studying effectively those subjects you are interested
in, even those that were difficult before. The course is available freely

Power Reading - Mind Development Course 5
This home study course can double your reading speed and supercharge your brain's capacity to digest, remember and implement huge amounts of information... essential ingredients to success in your professional and personal life.
We all learn to read at school, after a fashion. But for most of us, this is not an optimal use of our brain power. In this course you will learn to better use the left brain's focused attention combined with the right brain's peripheral attention, in close harmony. Good communication between the brain hemispheres is a prerequisite for creative thinking and also a sense of well-being, where thoughts and feelings are integrated.
Reading may be defined as an individual's total inter-relationship with symbolic information. Reading is a communication process requiring a series of skills. As such reading is a thinking process rather than an exercise in eye movements. Effective reading requires a logical sequence of thought patterns, and these patterns require practice to set them into the mind. The methods currently used in schools do not touch on the issues of speed, comprehension and critical analysis and indeed all those skills which can be described as advanced reading techniques. In short, most of your reading problems have not been dealt with during your initial education. By using appropriate techniques, the limitations of early education can be overcome and reading ability improved by 500% or more.
The course teaches in-depth reading techniques that greatly improve literary intelligence, so that you can clearly perceive the ideas and values that the writer is expressing and relate them to those of other authors and so be better able to make objective conclusions.

ABOUT GREGORY MITCHELL, MIND DEVELOPMENT PIONEER
Gregory Mitchell was a Mind Development researcher and practitioner for over 30 years. Born in 1947, he grew interested in the subject of mental evolution and development during adolescence. Following a Diploma in Psychology, Gregory obtained a Masters Degree in Eclectic Psychology. He then introduced a wide range of techniques to his private practice, including Transactional Analysis, NLP and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, plus many of his own innovative techniques.
Gregory ran group courses in Mind Development for 25 years in London that successfully applied his research. His students and clients came from many countries around the globe.
Gregory went on to research at the most advanced levels of Mind Development and discovered many further important insights - in particular, original work on mnemonics, artificial languages and logic. The latest research by cognitive scientists is only now beginning to uncover the ideas and methods that Gregory Mitchell had been working with for 30 years!
Before he retired in 1994, Gregory employed Peter Shepherd, founder of Trans4mind, at his company in London. He was mentor to Peter Shepherd for several years and much of the knowledge-base upon which Trans4mind.com was founded in 1998 was derived from this foundation.
NOTE by the site owner, Peter Shepherd
For 30 years Gregory Mitchell researched and developed the techniques for developing mental capacities such as memory, speed reading, enhanced intuition and creativity, and increased IQ.
Gregory ran group courses for many years in London that successfully applied his research. I was fortunate to work with him for several years during that time - his wide-ranging teachings are a major influence on the content of my book Transforming the Mind and the personal growth courses I have developed: the foundation course New Life Course and the advanced course, The Insight Project.
The foundation Mind Development courses 1-5 are available to purchase on this site, for those who recognize the vital importance of intellectual ability in discernment and contemplation, creativity and problem solving.
